Katherine Heigl has revealed that she answered her door to police in a bikini following a hot-tub dispute with her neighbour.

The Grey's Anatomy star told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show that she called the police after she got into a row with the neighbour, who was offended by the sight of Heigl and husband Josh Kelley spending time together in the tub.

Heigl told Seacrest: "The other night, my husband and I were chillin' in the hot tub, it was just the two of us…

"It was like 8.30-9pm at night and our neighbour starts screaming at us to go inside, and I'm like, 'I've had it, I've had enough of this. This is ridiculous; it's harassment and I'm calling the police."

She added: "We were totally just hanging out, making out in the hot tub – and by the way, it was so PG. We're not idiots. We're not going to be out there doing anything scandalous."

Heigl explained to Seacrest that she and musician Kelley were listening to his upcoming album and talking "quietly'" when the neighbour became angry.

So the Knocked Up actress called her own security team, who in turn called the police.

"They called the police and they went and talked to him and came over to talk to us… At that point, we were a couple cocktails in," she said.

"I just think the thing that is the most hilarious is that video footage of Josh and I in our bathing suits talking to the cops," she laughed.

"I just thought, 'We are like the most boring couple in Hollywood and that's the most scandalous thing we've ever done.'

It was a night of big revelations for "Knocked Up" star Katherine Heigl on Thursday.

First the natural blonde actress debuted her new look — as a brunette.

Then she showed off more than she planned when the strap of her low-cut red dress broke off as she was accepting an award as female star of the year at the ShoWest movie theater owners convention awards in Las Vegas.

And later she explained why she had colored her blonde tresses almost black. It's all for a new movie role as detective Stephanie Plum, the hero of Janet Evanovich's best-selling novel s.

"She is a very specific kind of girl, so I just wanted to show the legion of fans that I will be your vision of Stephanie Plum. It's important. I hate when my favorite books are made into films and they are just not what you expect," Heigl, 31, told Us Magazine.

The movie is based on Evanovich's novel "One for the Money" -- the first of 16 books in the Stephanie Plum mystery series about an unemployed New Jersey lingerie saleswoman who becomes a bounty hunter.

"I was pretty shocked at first…I was like, 'wow, it's dark, that's not just brown, that's black.' It took me a good day and a half to totally embrace it, "she said of her new look.

But on the other big question on the minds of fans — whether or not she has left the TV medical drama "Grey's Anatomy" – Heigl was keeping mum. Heigl has been out of the show for most of this season after taking time off to care for her newly-adopted daughter Naleigh.
