The pair were just some of the dogs that had been abandoned, then rescued by the Humane Society of Louisiana, which has been working with PETA and other area shelters to find homes for them.

Anderson is the honorary director of PETA and had volunteered to participate in an emergency "adopt-a-thon" to find new families for pets that were given up by people affected by the oil spill. Approximately 50 of the dogs were paraded in New Orleans City Park over the weekend, before the majority were sent off to join the program in Virginia. The Adopt-A-Thon is being sponsored by the Virginia Beach SPCA.

Several animal shelters in Southeastern Louisiana have reported a major increase in the number of animals brought in since the oil rig explosion of April 20th that sent millions of coil into the Gulf of Mexico. In fact, officials in St. Bernard Parish reported that "117 animals were given up in June, as opposed to just 17 in 2009."

"We couldn't find homes for all the dogs that were being surrendered before the spill," commented Brigdette Verdin of the Humane Society of Louisiana. The spill, which caused people to lose jobs and income here has only made the existing animal adoption worse."
